Stockholm: Art of My Choice

This is the piece Dawn Chorus by Kevin Beasley, and normally I’m not the biggest fan of modern art but I really like this creation! When I was first looking at it, I had no idea what the title was but It gave me the impression of sky and trees.  It is filled with movements of numberless colors that draw your eye all over the piece, not just in one direction. The heavy emphasis on movement makes the piece seem alive and really does give the idea of a chorus of many colors all working together. Color is so important to mention because  the warm tones near the center contrast against the cool tones background. Wisely placed greens and yellows even out the transition to create a dawn sky scene.

This piece is beautiful but I think it is important because it is innovative. It is made with layers of wool and some kind of resin or polymer. It  makes it pop in a 3D way with depth. It breaks out of the box and is part of the modern art world’s mission to redefine what art can be. As part of the museum, this piece also had a “make your own” section. Me and Joss made one! I still don’t know if this was the artist’s idea or the museum, however I feel like it got me involved. It engages the viewer in a unique way.

Part of a cultural capital means not only producing culture, but also getting the population to participate in culture, and thereby become bettered. This piece and activity got me creatively Involved and I didn’t want to leave! Secondly, this is honestly just fantastic and cool, and In order for museums to have a good reputation, they have to have art that people want to come see. This drew me in And honestly I would go back just to look at it again. Finally, museums of modern art must show innovation, creativity, and this piece fits to help fulfill the purpose of the museum. These new ideas are essential to creating a cultural capital.

  1. Wow this piece is incredible! What you say about creative involvement in this blog post is really poignant, Anna. I totally agree with you, getting the population to be involved in culture seems like a really important part of being a cultural capital. Sweden is clearly putting effort into that via their museums!

  2. The piece you chose to write about is absolutely stunning! I like how you talked about the mix media that was used to make this. I think stockholms decision to put a mix media art work out was smart. This new design and style is very modern and it shows Stockholm is keeping up with the times. I also love how you mentioned creativity. A city that embraces creativity is one that will thrive!

  3. Anna! Great piece to write about! You support the idea that this piece contributes to Stockholm's cultural capital by pointing out that the participation of the population in cultural creating is necessary for cultural creations to create culture. I think this is a really good point, a cultural artifact is a social entity and cannot exist independent of an associated social group. You also point out that the art is good, and that in order for art museums to have acclaim they have to have good art so that people will want to visit them. I again agree with you wholeheartedly.
