Greta Thunberg

This is me and some buddies right outside parliament near where Greta Thunberg would actively protest  during her “schools strike for climate” campaign. She wanted to raise awareness for environmental awareness. She wanted people to “panic” so that change would actually happen. She would skip school, later only Fridays, to prove an important point—that if the adults didn’t care about her future on this earth, the. She shouldn’t have to care about her future either. She was trying to show her immense fear that there would not be a pleasant future ahead if humans continue to mistreat the planet. The response to her protest was kinda amazing in my opinion because her fellow classmates and others around the globe rallied around her. Despite this, she still had to be the one to start the discussion and put herself out there.

She is an important girl to be discussed because she spoke out, was bold, and raised some important concerns. She got people thinking and simultaneously showed that young girls have voices that need to be heard. She faced some immense obstacles because people wanted to discredit her very real concerns based on her age, gender, and high functioning autism. Despite this, her voice of warning got some people thinking. She used the concept of intense urgency to get things moving. She also lives what she endorses and is very eco friendly, refusing to even travel by plane. She is important because she made people listen.

It is interesting to consider if Greta has been commemorated well because of the fact that she has only had the public eye on her fairly recently. Her first strike was in 2018.  It is too early to consider if she has been commemorated well, so I think the question to really consider is this: has her message been remembered? I would say no. After the initial excitement, a lot of her support died out. She did manage to get people thinking and is still actively protesting. I believe we could take her more because she is as avid as ever and listening to her and not discounting her could really help this planet.

  1. I have really loved learning about Greta Thunberg in your blog Anna! Learning about all of the change she is making in Stockholm made me deepen my knowledge of Sweden. Although she might get some backlash in her country and the world, she really has gotten a lot of attention and recognition by leaders in Sweden. I hope that they have taken her seriously, and have given her a way to make change!

  2. Loved your post, Anna! Also, I feel so cool being featured in your post. Eek! As you mentioned, Greta was going against multiple obstacles. For starters, as you said, Greta was a young girl speaking out on strong political topics. One obstacles was the fact that she was only a kid. Often, people don't take kids very seriously, especially with something like climate control. Second, she was a girl, and that made it that much harder. And a young girl is often seen as someone who is emotional and dramatic. Yet, Greta still made her point and is making a change despite these challenges.
